VIDEO 2 – Creating the Reserve

This film is introduced by David Chapman from Rathkeale College Whakaoriori Masterton.

The Millennium Native Forest Reserve has a rich and unexpected history. Once open pasture with a trout hatchery, the land was nearly developed into a high-end residential suburb in the 1970s. However, rising costs halted the project, leaving the area untouched until a new vision emerged in 1993.
Led by Warwick Dean and the Masterton South Rotary Club, Forest and Bird and volunteers and school groups worked tirelessly to clear invasive trees, plant native species, and restore the landscape.
Merv Kite played a key role in rejuvenating the lake, reshaping Kite Island, and designing the meandering walking tracks that make the Reserve so inviting today.
